separation is a proven efficiency and cost-effective method with potential for variety of applications. Worldwide, membrane processes are expected to be preferred as methods for dealcoholization under conditions of high ethanol selectivity, mild temperature, energy saving and high productivity.<br \/>The project focuses on the up-to-date problem of the quality of membrane separation: investigating and improving the selectivity of conventional and\/or modified polymer membranes towards water-alcohol on the one hand and the possibility for separation\/concentration of biologically active compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids on the other. The analysis includes a number of conventional and modified membranes, as well as several membrane processes including ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and nanofiltration.<br \/>The following main tasks are addressed in the project: 1) Analysis of the separation ability of conventional polymer membranes towards ethanol and valuable bioactive components such as polyphenols and flavonoids; 2) Investigating the potential of chemically modified with suitable temperature-sensitive polymer membranes to separate water-ethanol mixtures and\/or bioactive substances contained in wine; 3) Providing a process engineering approach for improving the separation through multistage membrane process operating in batch diafiltration or continuous mode.\u00a0 The experiments will be performed on model systems as well as on chosen real grape products.<br \/>The project sets ambitious objectives to expand the competence and enhance the scientific reputation of the team members through full interaction during interdisciplinary research within the project, to support the scientific advancement of young scientists and postdoctoral researchers in the team, and widespread the acquired new knowledge among the scientific community and among potentially interested producers, investors and NGOs. It is expected new knowledge and fundamental scientific results to be obtained in the field of material science, elucidation of the factors affecting the selectivity of the membrane, the processes of transfer through the membrane and optimization of the membrane process. The project will initiate the preparation of new\/modified polymer membranes with improved\/controlled selectivity, which is of fundamental interest to researchers
