•    Buried in soil polyethylenimines (PEIs) provide a nitrogen fertilizer for plants.
•    PEIs may play role a controlled release fertilizer with prolonged activity.
•    Poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline), LPEI and BPEI promoted the growth of oat and radish.
•    Polyethylenimines are harmful to plants only at high concentrations.
•    Tested polyethylenimines was classified as not toxic against Allivibrio fischeri.
