Abstract:
The aim of the project is the establishment of a Center of Excellence on advanced materials, and specifically for Modul 2 – new materials for medicine and pharmacy, by developing the research capacity (scientific equipment and human potential) of the Consortium partners and providing conditions for advanced and competitive research.
Module 2 involves research groups from the Institute of Polymers at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IP-BAS), the Faculties of Pharmacy (FPh-MU) and Medicine (FM-MU) at the Medical University – Sofia. The team of the project consists of 31 (26 from IP-BAS and 5 from MU) highly qualified experts, young scientists and PhD students. The planned activities include upgrading/renewing of the scientific infrastructure of IP-BAS and MU-Sofia, research activities, collaboration with leading European research centres in the development of materials for medicine and pharmacy, results dissemination, increasing the qualification of the young scientists and PhD students.
The envisaged upgrading and renewal of the scientific equipment and purchasing of modern specialized equipment is of great importance for the establishment of a Center of Excellence that will perform high-level sustained research. The research plans include preparation of advanced materials: micro- and nanoparticles; micelles/aggregates and liposomes; micro- and nanofibrous materials; gels and polymer-drug conjugates. These advanced materials will be prepared applying cutting-edge and promising approaches and will be applied in medicine and pharmacy. This interdisciplinary project integrates the research capacity of the Consortium and opens opportunities for the young researchers (including PhD and MS students) to acquire new skills and to be trained in new instrumental methods.
The establishment of the Center also contributes to the achievement of sustained collaboration between the participating research units and to the including of new partners from Bulgaria and abroad. Possibilities the equipment to serve to other scientific organizations and companies will be provided. The ambitions of the project team are to launch a leading Centre that will coordinate the research in the filed and will contribute to the development of knowledge-based economy in Bulgaria.
